It has been difficult to resolve the phylogeny of Ephedra as the species are very similar in gross morphology. Phylogenies based on molecular data has helped to improve the knowledge, but at the same time shown on similarities between ephedra species also on molecular level. The aim with my master project is to further study deep divergences in Ephedra.
Some of the questions I will try to address are: Is E. foeminea sister to all other species of Ephedra, or are all Mediterranean species a clade, sister to other species? Is E. foeminea at all a single species, or could it perhaps be better described as several species? If so, what are the molecular and morphological differences between (“sub”)-species/populations?
